A Letter to "Juliet"

Have you ever been curious what you would say to a fictional character? A little town in Italy, lets you do just that. "Letter's to Juliet" is truly out of a story, and you can even get a reply. Some ask for advice, other stories from marriages, all who write to Juliet are heard. Below you will find my letter to Juliet, and maybe you'll feel confident enough to write your own...

A Letter From A Different “Juliet”

By. Jules Verne

Some people say that life is what you make it. Others say that the choices you make in life are the ones that create the outcomes you get. Every action has a consequence. The same could be said for when you are working. Jobs have causes and effects like everything else in life does. Emotions have the same types of causes and effects, but those of the heart are always more confusing.

We take our hearts for granted I feel. They are a vital part of our lives but we don’t always treat them the way we should. Do we always treat them with the care they deserve? No. We eat things we shouldn’t, or sadly get diagnosed with something that could be a cause for something far worse. As we stand with hearts wide open for some, others continue to keep them guarded against the world for their own good. Or for their hearts.

I never imagined writing a letter to a fictional person. Let alone one that sacrificed herself for the sake of young love. Could it have been true? I guess in a sense it was. What would I ask for when writing for true love? I don’t even know where to begin for myself. I want what others have. Yet my mind being my own worst enemy decides for me when the time could be right to try.

Then there is the sense that no one truly wants something real anymore. That they are all people who just simply want hook ups, and being there with your heart on the line is now a dangerous game. Mine was on that same line like a tightrope walker when I was a younger girl. Of course my Romeo wasn’t scaling my balcony but more of a high school hallway. When he claimed he felt the “L” word for me, my heart jumped with everything I had. A first love at the time I always imagined it would be. So very wrong I was.

That’s the thing about love. Where love can bloom, thorns can be dangerous in its wake. Even if those first childhood crushes turn into relationships, love might not be the feeling that both the halves share. Love is four letters yet so is lust. Where an action that might be considered what both parties in the relationship want can change in an instant. Where “No” gathers a whole new meaning…

Therefore, Romeo if you’re out there reading this, know that not everyone is your “Juliet”. That falling in love at first sight is something so special that Hallmark makes it feel like a movie. But when we feel that love for the first time, it could be special as it blossoms into something more. The truth is, fear and anxiety are right there in your heart. Just like love has always been as well. That finding your Romeo or Juliet might be just as scary as when you had that first relationship maybe all those years ago. That boundaries, feelings, and emotions are all considered to be a part of  “loves” diagram.

Maybe love is like life. Consequences and actions go hand in hand with experiencing it all. That maybe taking the time before a relationship is what you need to heal. Those fireworks that you feel during that first kiss, or holding hands making you get butterflies shows you that you are ready to be with someone again.

Sincerely, just a woman whose heart has been broken one too many times by the Romeo’s of the world…

Update: Well, I thought I might have found the one.. My heart gave it everything I had except I started to let red flags go as simple things that just happened in relationships. Truly, I fell so deeply and truly for this Romeo that I did believe what I felt was real. Except that he didn’t seem to understand my complex boundaries were just there until he showed me he could’ve handled me along with them…

Something that is a bit funny because most think of time. What a calendar could tell you from the past to the present. Even what it could understand as a place that was once a day with a promising future or has a memory of the past. Month, Day, and Year in that order specifically.

Yet, a date.. Could even bring a smile to someone’s face with the promise of a romantic future. One that could mean the start of something new. A date, to dates, and then to dating which could bring you back to the calendar feeling.

And yet there are the dates that we sometimes don’t often think of. The ones that start your life and then the ones that come at the end of it. The emotional ones that can bring tears to one's eyes as they come up once a year in time.

No matter the time or place where you end up. There is always that constant that is there for you. To keep track for you even if you don’t think of them at the time. A date.

“Life has two dates, but when you think about it, it’s more how you live between them that matters most.”

The one thing that letters let us know can be not only how some feel but what they might be simply trying to convey to someone else. When words out loud can fail, silent words written can prevail. Like those even of a story or book, the letters that don’t end with “Sincerely”. Those letters can tell someone they might not be alone in what they are feeling.

So many people take letters for granted. Not only were they a vital part of a society that originally communicated via letters. “Dear whoever” and ended with “Yours Truly”. Sometimes people can hide behind the letters they write. Say everything they need to say before just simply sending before anything can change a mind. In Verona, Italy, you can even write a letter to Juliet, a fictional character from a classic play that even those who have never read it have heard of. Those kinds of letters.

Letters could also be understood as building blocks for our society. Isn’t it true that one of the first things you learned in school was The ABCs. Each letter with its own pronunciation and spelling configurations. Phonics and phonetics teach not only students in schools, but people; that things can be understood in more than one way. “Tried” and “Tired”, same letters, almost same sounds yet can be understood as a minimal pair in the linguistics world.

So even if you consider the science behind it all, what makes a letter, would you send one if you had the chance? Just write it all down, and simply drop it in the Post. Send.

"Spoons" On St. Patrick's Day

As many of us think of today as a day to celebrate good luck, or wear a lot of green and eat Corned Beef and Cabbage. I had mixed feelings ...
