D I V E R G E N T (23)

 D I V E R G E N T

Moving away from what is expected. Or, a popular Young-Adult Dystopian book series by Veronica Roth. Either it is found to be used instead of saying the word different. Yet they don’t seem to hold the same meanings.

To be different is to be unlike something or unrelated to someone else. Yet to be divergent is more to push a boundary so to speak. Fight for what you believe in more than just allowing yourself to be different from someone else. As if it could be dangerous to be too different but also to be too alike.

To me, divergence is more that you push the boundaries to see how far you could get. What is a decision that you made for someone else because they pushed that on you? Almost everyone can name a time when this has happened at least once. And if you found yourself, pushing away and unfolding from that pressure being built; that can be what it means to be divergent.

The smallest of boundary changes can have an impact. Even if you don’t believe them to have one. Like wearing regular jeans to work instead of black ones under a dress code. Or using a different font for an essay in school when you know it is supposed to be Times New Roman. Push those boundaries and move away from being the same.

S T U D E N T S (22)

 S T U D E N T S

Children learn at an astonishing rate. Different subjects each day, at different times. To test their knowledge on what they captured from those lessons. They show us what life is like through their eyes. How big a small problem to us might really feel to them.

Students show us that they aren’t afraid to push boundaries. Aren’t scared of us when we use our “teacher voices”. Even more want us to see them as individuals. They are fearless in their own little ways.

To understand a full lesson, they always ask “why?”. To make sense of something strange in their minds. Students have to know exactly why something happens the way it happens for that specific reason. Even more so if they are in trouble or a friend might in danger.

You see, some people think that students are too much a handful to deal with on a daily basis. Then there are those who only want to try and shape those little minds. Even more than a parent or guardian does at home. To them school is an adventure that is just around the corner.

In some ways, we are all still students. We all still learn every day of our lives, despite no longer being in those classrooms. Learning how life goes on after problems, or how we can handle more than we believed. Behind every person, is that student they once were. Closed off, curious, and intrigued to see life continue right before their very eyes.

As many of us think of today as a day to celebrate good luck, or wear a lot of green and eat Corned Beef and Cabbage. I had mixed feelings ...
